**Yemeni Coffeehouses: A Rapid Expansion of Alcohol-Free Gathering Spaces**

The rise of Haraz Coffee House and its franchising model reflects a growing demand for late-night, alcohol-free venues across the U.S.

Amid challenges in sourcing coffee due to ongoing conflict, the Haraz Coffee House in Michigan aims to expand its locations significantly, tapping into a diverse customer base.

The Haraz Coffee House, a Yemeni cafe franchise founded by Hamzah Nasser in 2021, is not only growing its presence in Dearborn, Michigan, but also making a mark across the entire United States. Nasser, a former truck driver who immigrated from Yemen at the age of six, seeks to double his locations from 30 to 60 by the end of the year, a move indicative of a wider trend towards late-night, alcohol-free gathering spaces that cater to diverse populations.

Operating a Yemeni cafe comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it involves importing coffee from Yemen, which has become increasingly complicated due to military conflicts affecting transportation routes. Recently, Nasser faced significant obstacles when Israeli bombings targeted the port city of Hudaydah, a crucial hub for coffee shipments. He noted how stressful it is becoming to ensure supply lines are maintained, as the demand for traditional Yemeni coffee grows.

Initially, Nasser aimed to open cafes mainly near Arab neighborhoods and mosques. His strategy has since evolved to include locations in vibrant, youthful areas where families tend to gather late at night and enjoy various offerings such as pistachio lattes, priced at $7.95. This approach underlines the importance of accessible and inviting spaces that can attract clientele from diverse cultural backgrounds, effectively creating a sense of community.

At the heart of the operation, the Haraz headquarters in Dearborn has expanded its capabilities, featuring two industrial roasters and a bakery that recently welcomed a French pastry chef to enhance their offerings. With dedicated efforts in marketing and franchising, Nasser's team is crunching numbers on potential expansion targets, indicating that Yemeni coffeehouses may soon become a common sight not just in Michigan but throughout the United States. As the franchise continues to pioneer this unique blend of cultural heritage and contemporary cafe culture, the future seems promising for Haraz Coffee House amidst turbulent times in its home country.
